Cleave—Constructions and Fractures

‘Constructions and Fractures’ is an environmental examination of the Thames Estuary Gateway, south London. Cleave, an audio research unit, have fused sonic studies, photography and writing into a psychogeographic study of four liminal locations along the river that possess fractured histories and optimistic futures.

The four sound studies embedded in the project are based on location research and the respective environmental infrastructures. The foundations of the compositions are noise textures that ‘respond’ to field recording events, layered with improvised electronica.

The Thames Gateway is noted to be Europe’s largest regeneration project. This designated brownfield site has ambitions to become a significant ecological region. “The Thames Gateway must be a beautiful place to live, work and visit, so that local communities can thrive and enjoy the benefits regeneration can bring. Improving the quality of life for all residents in the Gateway is a critical part of regeneration – building more affordable houses, investing in thriving town centres, beautiful public places and spaces, improving the quality of public services, and supporting community cohesion are all vital parts of the Thames Gateway programme.” — Thames Gateway, The Delivery Plan.
