WRAD—A Visual Language Study On Roots
‘WRAD’ is a short print publication exploring the ecologies of the wood through photography, montage and language. The work delves into the etymology of various ‘root’ words, tracing their origins, transformations, and the myriad ways they shape our understanding of language and culture.
The typeface used within the publication is ‘Gik’ by Denis Serebryakov; the angular qualities of the typeface mirrors the structure of roots whilst carrying a technical note. Dictionary text within the project is accompanied by a passage from ‘Nausea’ by Jean-Paul Sartre — a writing examining psychology through an encounter with a root.
Wrad—A Visual Language Study On Roots, belongs to a series of projects (including A Woodland Poem in Strings) that aim to bring a lateral appreciation of Lesnes Abbey Woods in south-east London.
