A Woodland Poem in Strings
Lesnes’ Abbey Woods is an ancient woodland located in south-east London.
‘A Woodland Poem in Strings’ was formed to offer an exploratory reading of how the wood can be perceived and understood through literature, music, and image — a poetics of place.
Four haibun (a Japanese technique of poetry and prose) by Quentin S. Crisp provide the corners of this project; each section an observation of embodiment and experience within the wood’s pathways. Accompanying these are a series of in-situ performances by cellist Hannah Marshall. Marshall uses string improvisation to respond to, and examine, the textures and flows of the woodland’s nuanced spaces. Writing and composition are in conversation about their experience of this valued environment, with each artform speaking in its personal dialect.
This project is a collective offering to the Thamesmead and Abbey Wood regeneration project.
